Sophie Salerno, 96, of Old Forge, died Wednesday at Riverside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was married to Louis "Deuce" Salerno, who died in 1994.
Born in Moosic, daughter of the late John and Amelia Zaleski, she attended the Moosic public schools. Before retirement, she was employed at Brooks and Duchess Manufacturing. She was a member of ILGWU, the Felitesse Association and the Old Forge Ladies Club that she enjoyed traveling with. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Old Forge.
Sophie was a loving mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed. She enjoyed cooking, especially Italian foods.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Dr. Armando Sallavanti, with special recognition to Mary Ann, Debbie and the hospice nurses for their kind and compassionate care given to Sophie.
Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline Barbetti, Old Forge; and Jeanette Colwell, Duryea; seven grandchildren, Joseph, Deborah, Donna and David Barbetti, Robert and Bruce Moluski, and Robyn Trombly; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers, John, Joseph, Bart, Peter and Stanley Zaleski; and two sisters, Felia Sompel and Josephine Zaleski.
The funeral will be Saturday with Mass at 10 a.m. in Prince of Peace Parish/St. Mary's Church, West Grace Street, Old Forge. Relatives and friends attending are asked to go directly to the church. Interment, Old Forge Cemetery.
There will be no viewing hours. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Louis V. Ciuccio Funeral Home, 145 Moosic Road, Old Forge.
