Dear Cathy, My sincere condolences to you and the extended Harris-DeAngelis family on your great loss. Jim was my Fellowship Program Director at Hopkins 40 years ago and remained my teacher, mentor, role model, friend and inspiration ever since. The times we spent together were among the most professionally rewarding and personally meaningful in my career. Jim was a true polymath with a keen aesthetic sense and an extrordinary synthetic ability that ecompassed multiple scholarly fields in the sciences, arts and humanities. His monumental single-author textbook on Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry changed the thinking and approach of the entire profession and continues to be an invaluable resource for clinicians. His many years of published commentaries on works of art and artists are profoundly revealing and insightful and should be collected and preserved. His reserach and advocacy for the mentally disabled resulted in advances in the condition and treatment of this whole poulation. Above all, Jim was a warm, generous, humorous, creative, and caring person with an unstinting devotion to his family, his patients, and his former students. Like many others, I regarded Jim with a mixture of admiration, deep affection and gratitude. His memory and legacy will endure in all those who were privileged to know him. Richard McCarrick

Dear Kathy,
I was saddened to learn of Jim's passing.
My thoughts and sympathies are with you and your loved ones.
Like so many others, Jim had a profound impact on my professional life.
Perhaps more importantly, the care, compassion, and selflessness that he embodied all had an even more profound impact on me personally.
I always cherished him as a colleague, a mentor, and a friend, and will keep his memory and his example alive within me.
Please know how much I care about you and about our beloved Jim, and feel, as I am sure you do, that I am but one among so many who so deeply respect and care for your both.
I send you much love, deep sympathies, and know that your cherished memories of Jim will strengthen you as you move forward.

I express my sympathy for this terrible loss.
I was shocked to learn of Jim’s passing because he had recently written a recommendation for me.
I met Jim when he interviewed me for a post-doctoral fellowship a couple of decades ago.
Since then he has mentored me. He kindly included me in his clinical translational research that yet requires completion and publication.
I was gratified that he send flowers for my mother’s funeral a decade ago.
The sun also rises. We survivors shall honor Jim’s legacy by continuing and developing the projects for which Jim provided the foundations.

Dear Jim and Cathy,
This is a note I should have written long ago to both of you. Jim, you and I met >40 years ago at Hopkins and you introduced me to (a) a conceptual shift to developmental disabilities (away from mental retardation) and we began to discuss how the NIMH research agenda on DD might need to shift, and (b) concepts of developmental psychopathology that I had not fully appreciated. Cathy, we met later, but you were such a star in the constellations of women in science and medical education that it was hard to escape seeing your impact on the medical school education and the importance of your thoughts to guide the future generations of biomedical researchers.
I am hopeful that our frequent ACNP chats during the social hours will continue with Jim as spirit organizer. Cathy and I will sustain the tradition of learning from one another in that wonderful ACNP context for collegial exchanges.
Jim, it was Mort Kramer who taught us about ‘crossing the bar,’ and asked me to mention his ‘crossing the bar’ when he passed on. I will sustain Mort’s legacy and honor you as you also ‘cross the bar.’ Goodcheer, our friend, Jim A.

It is with the greatest sadness that Suzan and I realize that our friend Jim has passed away. We think warmly of the many times we were together in many places, including Denmark and the US, both privately and professionally, and the excellent advice and observations that Jim always shared with us. Farewell Jim.
We have been on so many journeys, together with the SSBP, over the last 2 decades, and it’s so very sad you have had to take this one alone.
Now we won’t ever get to take the planned trip down the Norwegian fjords that had to be cancelled last year but at least we have very happy memories of time spent in Australia, the US and many countries in Europe.
You have been the honorary father to the SSBP since it began, both to those who were there at the start and the many who have joined over subsequent years. We will miss your expertise and wisdom and particularly those presentations that combined your scientific learning with your knowledge of the world of art. And, of course, you also played the role of unofficial photographer to the society, documenting our meetings and providing us with a wonderful archive of people and events.
Many thanks to you and Cathy for being such great friends to me, and to the Society, for so long. We will miss you so much.

Dr. Harris was a true inspiration to me and my class of fellows at the Hopkins Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. His passion and sheer joy for teaching always made us think beyond the scope of what books or lectures could teach. It was a true honor to have known Dr. Harris and to have learned from him. I believe someone lives on, if their teachings surpass the scope of their lives... in that sense Dr. Harris will forever be alive in our minds for those who had the great honor of learning from him. Curious, attentive, persistent, friendly, open to discussion and teaching, this is how we remember Prof. J. Harris whom we met at SSBP conferences together with his wife Cathy.
We remember the pleasure he showed in being hosted, on the occasion of the 2010 SSBP conference in Pavia, at the Collegio Borromeo in a 16th century room and his surprise and respectful attention when accompanied to the University museum by Prof. P. Mazzarello, he looked at the drawings, the microscope and Golgi's study and sat at his desk.

Jim's curiosity and sense of wonder was insatiable until the very end. We shared a love of visual art - paintings and films - and recognized their relevance to the practice of medicine. In his last message to me in late March, he offered his astute interpretation of the painting, "Embroidering the Earth's Mantle" (Remedios Varo): "I saw a shaman reading an incantation as he/she stirred a caldron with ethereal music playing in the background. The shaman actions lead to the weaving of a fabric creating new worlds." Prayers for the repose of Jim's soul as he passes over the threshold of one world and enters another. With love - Meg

Jim and Cathy have been role models for how to lead a meaningful and a balanced life. Jim was so thoughtful and always seeking to share both his knowledge and his kindness with his colleagues but, particularly with his trainees. He took the child psychiatry residency graduation ceremony photos to share with the staff and the residents to help mark the milestone. I am grateful that I was able to work in Jim's clinic when I was a resident and that I was able to attend the meetings of the Society for the Study of Behavioral Phenotypes with Jim and Cathy. Yes, Jim was a gifted scholar. But like Cathy, he also tended to people, nurturing them and helping them to be happy. He was remarkably kind and caring. After meeting my mother, he would ask about her health when we spoke. He was instrumental in creating programs at the Kennedy Krieger Inst. (at that time it was named the Kennedy Inst.) and the patients, their families and community has benefited from these programs for decades, and will continue to do so in the future. When I began to study people with ASD as they aged, Jim was one of the first people I talked with and a great font of knowledge, advice, and wisdom. For many years he viewed and taught the Bergman film Wild Strawberries to senior residents and used it as a vehicle to discuss issues of aging and the meaning of life--topics not often discussed in residency but of importance to those who take a life-course approach to mental life. Jim was a remarkable, renaissance man. He was an astoundingly skilled physician who cared for all but offered his very special attention to families facing the extraordinary challenges of neurodevelopmental disorders. He approached these families with incredible compassion but also with the determination to offer the very best that science could bring to the care for and understanding of these disorders. His scholarship in this area alone would have made an extraordinary career. However, this was not enough for Jim. He was also a scholar of medicine, history, art, healthcare, ethics, and so much more. He was a devoted teacher who shared his scholarship with others in a way that did not just teach - he inspired. Along with his partner, Cathy, they served as role models as a professional couple, dedicated physician-scientists and committed humanists. The Harris-de Angelis family incorporated all who came in contact with them and so, it is as a family that we grieve for this loss. While Jim's body is now still, he remains very much alive in the hearts and minds of those he taught and encouraged.
